RADIATION SAFETY SUGGESTIONS:

For the User/Practitioner/Surgeon

  • Lead aprons, gloves and sleeved shirt/jacket should be worn by anyone working within 39 inches of the x-ray head
  • Personnel should never be in the primary beam
  • Patients should not be held during an exposure
  • Persons not directly involved in the procedure should be excluded from the procedure room
  • The room should be large and there should be a radiation protective screen
  • Dosimeters should be worn to identify if unacceptable exposure to x-rays is occurring

For the Patient:

  • Use the fastest combinatin possible to obtain pictures
  • Collimate the primary beam to include only the area of interest
  • Use a reasonable film-focal distance
  • Avoid repeat exposures

For the Public:

  • While the beam scatter is minimal on a C-Arm, check local regulations to determine shielding requirements for the treatment room
  • Warning lights should be placed outside the procedure room to signal preparation and exposure
  • Radiation warning signs should be present on doors leading to the procedure room
  • People under 16 and pregnant women should not be allowed to assist in procedures.

What’s on your Mind?

Here’s some questions and answers from site visitors and customers.

I am opening a new office soon. Will I need to place shielding in the walls to use a C-Arm?

Safety from radiation is of utmost concern for every facility, state, physician and patient. When it comes to shielding for a room where the C-Arm will be utilized, the typical answer is that shielding is not required and the beam limiting design of the system reduces scatter. However, some states and federal authorities may require it. It is always best to contact your state department of radiation safety to be certain that you are in compliance.

NOTE WELL: this is true of every state, you must have a physicist come to inspect and check the calibration of the unit prior to your using it. THIS IS IMPORTANT to ensure the unit is in compliance and to obtain your license to use the system on patients. READ MORE...

Is there is a special tax incentive for leasing equipment right now?

In Section 179 of the tax code, business owners who acquire equipment for their business: machinery, computers, software, and other tangible goods, usually prefer to deduct the cost in a single tax year, rather than a little at a time over a number of years. This deduction is known by its section in the tax code, a Section 179 deduction. Under Section 179, businesses that spend less than $800,000 a year on qualified equipment, can write off up to $250,000 in 2008. The rules are designed for small companies, so the $250,000 deduction phases out when a business purchases more than $800,000 in one year.  (Companies cannot write off more than their taxable income.)

What procedures will I be able to perform with a C-Arm?

There are hundreds of procedures which have been performed with C-Arms. Colon and rectal surgery for cancer, Crohn’s disease, polyps, colitis along with laproscopic surgery for many general procedures and placement of stents are among the most frequent. With the increase in carpal tunnel and sports-related injuries, C-Arms are used extensively for fractures, hip replacements, spine surgery, corticosteroid needle injections. Recent, too, are advances in urology which have seen a rise in the use of C-Arms to help find sources of bleeding and infection, treat kidney stones, cyst decortication, and full or partial kidney removal.

Does DECT have local reps to perform warranty and service work.

The simply answer is YES. The more complicated answer is that we have partnered with several large and regional service companies. If you experience any service issues with a DECT product purchased from us during the warranty period, you call us. We promptly dispatch a service tech from available resources.

Is used equipment safe, viable alternative to brand new?

Absolutely. When you think about it, everything in your facility is used. And you continue to use it everyday without much forethought. You depend on it and you can certainly depend on remanufactured equipment from DECT. Our engineers tell us that if equipment is going to fail, it will most likely fail in the first part of its life cycle. Used equipment, when properly remanufactured, can actually be better than new. Our biomed techs inspect each piece of equipment when it arrives at our facility. If it's suitable to be remanufactured, it enters the refurb facility. If it's marginal, we strip it down and sell it for parts.

Is there a big difference between used and DECT remanufactured?

A significant difference. Used equipment is just that - used. Maybe it’s in good condition, maybe not. It’s a gamble. Remanufactured equipment has been thoroughly stripped down and rebuilt from the component level up. In addition to the new parts, it’s cosmetically refurbished to look Like New with OEM colors. Our remanufacturing process eliminates the risk of buying used. You receive a high quality products at reasonable prices.

Would DECT be interested in taking our old C-Arm or some other equipment we are not using anymore in trade, or maybe buying it outright?

Again, the simple answer is yes. However, our specialties are the core modalities of portable x-ray systems, mobile C-Arms, motorized film viewers and radiological rooms. We do buy other equipment for our partners as they need equipment for their service operations. The best advice is to use our sell-your-equipment form and let us know what you have, we’ll reply with an offer quickly. If you’re looking for a specific piece of equipment you don’t see on our website, simply ask your DECT System Consultant.

I spoke with a DECT rep and he kept emphasizing that I should buy now. Why the strong arm tactics?

We hear that a lot. The Plain Truth is that the whole remarketing industry is predicated on supply and demand so TIMING IS EVERYTHING. If there's a piece of equipment available or coming available, you really need to make a commitment right away.

In our business, a maybe is the same as a no. If a customer doesn't claim it today, that system may not be around tomorrow. To those who don't understand our business, it sounds like a sales line. But it's the plain truth. We generally have more buyers than product.

Does DECT offer training on the products you sell?

The same service companies as above are fully qualified to install any of the products that we sell. In addition, training is available on most products we sell and is very reasonably priced. Vendor classes can often cost upwards of $3000 or $4000. DECT provides training at your site, for $1000 total. It’s another way that you save when you buy from DECT. Ask your DECT System Consultant for details when discussing your needs.

What exactly does the DECT warranty cover?

All equipment sold by DECT carries a full warranty for parts and labor. If something does go wrong - we make it right. We've made a long term commitment to the marketplace and you just can't put a price tag on that. Our standard warranty is ONE YEAR and it applies to nearly all products we sell. It is a parts and labor warranty that includes the entire unit except for x-ray tubes and image intensifiers. The latter are covered by a pro rata manufacturer’s warranty when new glass is included in the product.

Do you offer leasing and other creative financing alternatives?

Yes. We work closely with several leasing companies, which offer flexible lease terms, excellent, low rates and have easy application processes. One of the leasing companies we use has the simplest application process you’ve ever seen. Ask your DECT Rep to include a lease quote for you.
